When Dorothy, Toto and the Scarecrow were attacked by animated trees in The Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum brought an image to life which touched deep into our psyches. After all, for thousands of years, humans have looked up and seen branches stretching out above us, waving, rocking, reaching as if menacing those below.
A few years back, touring the rainforest near Seattle, I took the photo below because the image was striking. This tree loomed overhead, and with its moss-covered limbs seemingly reaching, like tendrils, ready to grab us.
