Movie Micro-Reviews: Edition 25

To ease myself into the new year, here's the latest batch of micro-reviews. Once again, I'm surprised by including a very old ('80s) movie - I can't believe I've never micro-reviewed Lethal Weapon before. Get Smart was the surprise in this batch. I loved it.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

83

Originally reviewed in Edition 15.

I’m so glad we own this. Inventive. Pretty. Fine performances. I love Edmund. Bring on “Voyage of the Dawn Treader.”

Romeo and Juliet

82

The Zeffirelli classic from 1968. Though a few important lines are left out for the sake of a two-hour film, the core is there. Whiting is just wonderful as a love-sick teen, and there is just no Juliet like Hussey; pretty, vulnerable, sexy, bright. We still love her.

Once Upon a Mattress

51

Not particularly well done. The musical itself is just a middling effort (though it has a special place in my heart) but the best parts are left out or lost in other aspects in this TV-special version.

Patriot Games

67

OK, but not gripping. Ford is good as Ryan, Bean’s a good bad guy, Archer is pretty and smart, but the plot is just OK.

Signs

80

Gripping, suspenseful. A message, too – and some nice surprises.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)

69

An extremely good setup, with very human reactions, and characters we could believe. The end, however, was somewhat ambiguous.

Back to the Future

89

Fun, well put together, many fun things to see on each re-viewing, excellent music, and a take on time travel that makes me smile. Love this movie.

Dark Knight

95

Originally reviewed in Edition 21.

Get Smart

80

Funny! Really! There was plenty of the old humor, but lots of new action, and a modern take on the Smart/99 relationship. I laughed and laughed. I might have to own this one.

Lethal Weapon

74

More drama than the later “action only” episodes. I like it. Fun like “Die Hard” but with a “buddy movie” aspect that differentiates it nicely. Gibson and Glover have good chemistry.

The Incredible Hulk

82

Reviewed in Edition 18. Watched a couple more times to show family and friends who hadn’t seen it. It’s cool to see the origins of Hulk villains The Leader and The Abomination. It is somewhat interesting to see the variety of roles William Hurt will do.
