We started another viewing of the "Star Trek: Voyager" series over the weekend. I read a series of Star Trek books last year, and it put me in the mood to see Neelix, B'Elanna Torres, Harry Kim, Tuvok, and Captain Janeway again. What a delight!
I am impressed with how well-formed the characters are from the very first episodes. In other series (certainly in other Star Trek series) it seems to take the writers and actors a season or more before the "canonical" version of the characters emerges. In "Voyager" they all seem extremely close to the people they'll be for seven seasons. Oh, sure, they'll grow: B'Elanna will gain confidence, the Doctor will work through the process of becoming a "person" and Harry necessarily loses the "wet behind the ears" aspect, but the essential core of each remains the same.
Yes, there is at least one episode which is so stupid, we will skip it, but for the most part I will enjoy seeing these stories again.
