Today is Tax Day (in the U.S.) and I think it's helpful to understand, at a high level, where our federal government spends our tax dollars. I saw this information on facebook from the National Priorities Project, and I think it's valuable enough to share.
Click the picture to be taken to the picture directly from the site, and if you want to see the page describing the data, here's that link. Also on that site are links you can click to, for example, see what the average federal tax is for your state. I also like the personalized tax receipt, which breaks down your federal tax total into the categories shown in the image. Sure, the people at National Priorities Project have a bias for the subcategories they show on the receipt. But, again, the information is useful.
Now, here's a related chart from the same site, which shows how spending will be in 2015, given what is in place today. I don't understand what the discrepancy is between the percentages in the "dollar chart" and this chart, so I have more reading to do, I guess.
