This summer, we undertook the delightful task of watching Battlestar Galactica (the good version) from beginning to end. I had been wanting to do this for a while, because the story told in the series is one long odyssey, with plenty of mystery, intriguing characters, and a healthy mix of faith vs. pragmatism.
Since Patrick was living with us, and he had never seen it, we had a great reason to do it. Well, we finished up the finale of the series just a few days before Patrick left for Temple, and I am exceptionally glad we saw the series again.
There were many details I had forgotten (and likely will forget again before I watch it again -- which I am highly likely to do in a few years) but more importantly, there were clues and nuances which, when the episodes are seen closely together, tie together very well. In this series, as in life, none of the good guys are as good as you'd hope, but they are still better than the bad guys, who are also not quite as bad as you'd like to assume, but they are bad enough. Watching the interplay between the good, the bad, and the gray was delicious.
Like I did when it first ended, I loved the finale. We had some great discussions about its implications, and what the author of the story really intended. Perhaps devotees of Lost already know about Battlestar, but since Battlestar was a cable show, they might not know that, like Lost, this was a continuing mystery that was well worth the time, energy and devotion of its fans.
Some of its alumni are on other shows, and some should be. Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell were stars already. Katee Sackhoff did her bit on the last season of 24. Grace Park will be on the new Hawaii Five-0. James Callis was a on FlashForward and now is on Eureka. I hope to see many more make the jump to recognized TV, because they deserve it. But I also hope to see more from Ronald D Moore, executive producer and one of the primary writers, who also was co-executive producer of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, which I love, and am watching again, as time permits, on the treadmill and while building Magic decks. These people know what I like.
It was a good summer!
