Review - Dark Apprentice

Title: Dark Apprentice
Author: Kevin J Anderson

Dark Apprentice is the middle book of the Jedi Academy trilogy which began with Jedi Search. As expected in a "book 2" things get more complicated, the danger which loomed at the end of book 1 becomes more menacing, and we are left with our heroes in significant danger.

Several of the new characters introduced in Jedi Search, encountered by several of our main characters, show themselves to have Jedi potential, and join Luke Skywalker on the 4th moon of Yavin for his academy. Unfortunately, there is a great evil waiting on the moon. At the same time, Admiral Daala has her mini-fleet running through the galaxy causing trouble and destruction. Added to these difficulties, the planet Carida, which trained the Empire's military, are engaged in espionage in preparation for what I assume will be a significant part of book 3.

Though Dark Apprentice does not stand on its own, once Jedi Search is over, you want to read book 2, and it carries the reader quickly through the action. I am quite looking forward to the conclusion. OK, so it's not the book equivalent of "The Empire Strikes Back" in quality, tension and revelations, but it's definitely a good member of the same family.
