Movie Micro-Reviews: Edition 100

Some really excellent movies for the 100th edition!

Catching Fire (Hunger Games 2)
92
Wow.  They did it. OK, so Katniss was not as annoyingly a teenager in this movie as she was in the book, but they got the WHOLE story in, and it was thrilling and the characters were perfectly cast.  Loved it and can’t wait for the next one.
Ender’s Game
82
Yes.  They did it.  The ending may not satisfy consumers of typical Hollywood “Hero’s Journey” stories, but the choices for actors worked, the effects were spot-on, and I was happy with the result.
Now You See Me
73
It’s a caper movie with magicians.  And it’s more than that.  Really fun.  Big, well-used cast.
Safety Not Guaranteed
70
Strange film.  Interesting characters.  I was definitely entertained.
Thor: The Dark World (Thor 2)
59
Hard to recommend. I liked it enough, given it’s Thor, and Tom Hiddleston is so good as Loki.  It was often amusing, but more often confusing.  There was opportunity for emotional connections, but it didn’t happen.  Ah well, the effects were good, and Hemsworth makes a good Thor.
Gravity
75
Quite intense, and a good character story amidst the terror of the situation.  I actually think Sandra Bullock did more to show her ability as an actor in this than in her Oscar performance. Wish I had seen it in 3D.  Still, well worth the viewing!
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
84
A fine rendering, even with the modifications and additions.  Nice to be back in Tokein’s and Jackson’s Middle Earth.  A little long in spots.  Reminds me that the same Peter Jackson who gave us LotR also gave us King Kong.  Nevertheless, it’s fun, it’s good, I liked it, and I will rewatch it.  Not as often as LotR, but I will.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1
90
Very faithful in theme to the first part of the book.  The isolation forced upon, and felt by, the three main characters is well represented.  Definitely the middle part of a three-part story begun in The Half-Blood Prince.  I can’t imagine ever watching this without watching Part 2 quite soon afterward, if we have the choice.  And when seen in that context, I might raise its rating.
[I did.]
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2
95
A spectacular, action-packed, moving end to a brilliant series.  Bravo!
