Movie Micro-Reviews: Edition 51

One weekend we watched some of the best of the best. Then this past weekend, we saw some newer movies through Netflix.

Avatar

95

Brilliant! Now that animation can do this, the possibilities for storytelling grow exponentially. Story: very good; Imagination: Off the Scale! Loved it!

My longer review is here.

[Now that I can see it without 3D, certainly it’s not quite as impressive, but it is still excellent -- fun, and beautiful, with an engaging story.]

Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring

100

What can I say. The mood is perfect. The story hangs together. The characterizations are charming and thrilling. The effects enhance and draw you in, rather than amaze or distract. Fantastic.

[We had work to do in front of the TV. It was a good weekend for movies. All 95 or more. Last reviewed in Edition 45.]

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

98

The Ents are not silly! The orcs are mean. The slightly lower rating is for confusion they could have worked a bit harder to clear up. But still near perfection!

Lords of the Rings: Return of the King

100

What can I say? Probably the best film (series) ever. We love Eowyn, Aragorn, Frodo and Sam, and their fates make us smile and cry at the same time.

Originally reviewed in Edition 7.

Kick-Ass

84*

"Kick-Ass" is not for everyone. But, boy oh boy, was it for me! And the Dudes who were with me. I knew so little about the movie before I sat down. Surprise after surprise, geeky teenage flashbacks, more violence than you can wag a finger at, and the coolest hero in years! Hit Girl is awesome!

The asterisk? I can’t recommend this to people who don’t like violence, teenage sexuality, profanity, blood, or more violence.

Sherlock Holmes

80

I think almost anyone who likes movies would like this one. It’s not extraordinary, but it’s fun. Forget what you know of the original Holmes and you can enjoy this for what it is: an action film with some deduction.

Last Chance Harvey

70

Harvey is having a bad couple of days. And they follow a long stretch of bad years. Then, at his lowest, he meets Kate. Two people going through the motions try to connect.
