Movie Micro-Reviews: Edition 48

Some OK movies, with a couple of excellent titles. I'd conditionally recommend most of them. But "Time Traveler's Wife" is a clear recommendation! And Sarah Michelle Gellar's "Possession" is not awful, but I'd hate to recommend it.

Girl, Interrupted

74

Jolie won an Oscar for this and deserved it. Ryder was no slouch, either.

2012

63

This was fun. Over-the-top unbelievable, but fun. Just forget how many people are dying. Popcorn movie if you enjoy action.

Possession (2002)

67

Two researchers chase a mysterious unknown relationship between two 19th century authors. The English countryside and manors were a great setting. (Gwyneth Paltrow film)

Dish (The)

65

An unknown story about the Apollo 11 mission that is charming and inspiring. See, there’s this dish in Australia, and the TV signals from the landing needed to get to all of us somehow…

Big Chill

90

A perfect friendship movie for its time. No easy answers, and a cast-full of good performances.

Possession (2009)

50

Ambiguity is only good in a movie that means to be ambiguous. Did this one? Interesting X-Files-esque idea, but not developed enough. (Sarah Michelle Gellar film)

Cry Freedom

79

Very interesting story about the events that led to the end of apartheid, centering on Steve Biko, and Donald Woods, who wrote Biko’s story. Those of us who grew up while this was happening should see this. And then probably Invictus.

72

Another example of the extreme realism of animation these days, with a cool post-apocalypse story.

Time Traveler’s Wife

Excellent! A sci-fi romance, with real sci-fi, and real romance. The concepts were executed well, and though it was not clear how the time travel worked, we believed it all. I would own this.
