Things I learned on my vacation

  • From Rochester to Manhattan to Shepherdstown, West Virginia, to Milwaukee and back is 2500 miles.
  • Pennsylvania is beautiful - so much forested driving, with enough up-and-down to make things interesting.
  • However, at every bridge Pennsylvania has a sign "Bridge May Be Icy." I'm sorry - but that's just too funny. In so many ways. Really? In August?
  • Ohio's toll road makes sense -- pay once if you're crossing the state -- as you exit.
  • Illinois' toll roads make zero sense. None.
  • GPS systems can really help, especially trying to get into and out of downtown Manhattan. However ...
  • GPS systems are not perfect. [Just close enough that you trust them, and then get confused. Thank goodness for "Recalculating."]
  • Miller Park is a beautiful place to watch baseball.
  • The week before Labor Day is the best time to tour Washington DC.
  • There should be more reasons to ride a Segway. Our two-hour tour of DC on Segways was a highlight of the trip.
  • There is more to know about the Civil War within 15 miles of Shepherdstown than I will ever know.
  • The "Taste of Madison" is well worth the time and crowds. Yummmm.
  • There's nothing quite like good times with good friends.
And, finally
  • If your daughter asks you to, you can avoid tearing up when you say goodbye.

And that's all I have to say about that.
